Dare to Give . . . to Missions!

How we spend our money is a direct reflection of where our heart is focused. Daring Daughters, let’s DARE TO GIVE!

How we view money and possessions is connected with how we view God’s priority in our life. As women who love God, we should have the perspective that everything belongs to God: all of our time, all of our talents, all of our life decisions, and yes . . .

. . . even all of our money.

If you’re a mother or a mentor, it is important to teach our kids about God’s principle of tithing (giving 10 percent of our income to Him); yet more importantly, we need to instill into the heart of the next generation a conviction that 100 percent of everything in our lives belongs to God.

And having a giving heart is a principle much easier caught —by our example— than taught by our words.

Even if you (or your family, or your kids) never move to live in a foreign country, you’re still called, as a Christian, to participate in helping to expand God’s kingdom—both locally and throughout the world.

As Hudson Taylor, a famous missionary to China said, “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.”

There are many ways you could raise extra money to support international mission projects. Here is a list of activities commonly used by children’s churches, youth groups, and short-term mission teams.

The time will come, however, as your mission-commitment grows, when “occasional” fundraising efforts won’t be enough.

A Daring Daughter simply needs to earn and save money, step out in faith and trust, and manage (or “steward”) those resources according to what’s most important, for God’s kingdom-purposes, and for eternity.

10 Easy Ideas to Raise Money for Missions

  • Decorate a special container, perhaps with a photo, and begin saving coins for a specific mission project.
  • Make a “thermometer” to chart a specific family mission goal, and put it on your refrigerator.
  • Have a yard sale with all proceeds going for a specific mission project.
  • Offer to do work for relatives or friends (such as housecleaning, laundry, child care, or yard work) in exchange for people donating toward a special mission project.
  • Collect newspapers for recycling.
  • Recycle aluminum (and go around neighborhoods to get even more).
  • Organize a car wash; rather than charging a set amount, receive donations.
  • Make and sell something, like a craft project or a baked item.
  • Receive mission donations for after-church lattes and espressos.
  • Have a “multiply your talents” project. Moms, you can give your daughter a certain amount of money with the mission-minded purpose of using this money, along with his or her talents, abilities, and creativity, for a specified length of time (perhaps two weeks, or one month) to raise money for a specific mission project. Your daughter could use the money to buy gas for a lawn mower, to buy lemonade to sell on the corner, or to buy ingredients for a neighborhood bake sale. At the end of the designated time have each her return the original money, along with the surplus she raised, and give it toward the mission project.

Remember, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”

A great way to “earn money” for missions is simply to SAVE MONEY for MISSIONS. Instead of window-shopping through the malls, or overspending on too many gifts, stay away from the stores and be on-the-lookout for international mission needs and local benevolence projects.

My Favorite Mission Biographies

From a young girl:

I’ve always wanted to be a missionary. It all started when my Mom began reading YWAM missionary biographies to me when I was in 3rd grade. In 4th grade my Mom spent our whole year of home school going through Ann Dunagan’s curriculum, “Teaching With God’s Heart for the World”. We were exposed to lots of geography, cultures and missionaries. It was a fantastic year of discovery for us!

We also started to use “Operation World” to pray more specifically for the needs of nations. We would all get down on the floor and pray for the nation of that day. This daily dose of remembering the needs of the world made a huge impression on me! I started reading biographies in my free time and was greatly inspired by them.

All of them have left an impression on me, but if I had to list just my favorite, favorite ones, here is my list:

1. Kisses from Katie by Davis

2. Evidence Not Seen by Deibler Rose

3. I’d Do It Again by Benedict

4. Miracle of Miracles by Nevisa (Islamic convert)

5. Living Sacrifice by Dr. Rosevear

6. Mission Possible by Laszko (not for children)

7. These My People by Dickson

8. YWAM Biographies in order of my favorite, Lillian Trasher, Sundar Singh, Mary Slessor, Rachel Saint, Jonathan Goforth, Ida Scudder

Even if you never step foot on foreign soil, these stories of God’s faithfulness will inspire you to love and good deeds wherever you are.

Great links for HOPE and JOY!

God has a grace-empowered HOPE and JOY for us live in and to ABIDE IN, that is not based on our present circumstances. As believers in Jesus, we can STAY in His joy and hope, because God is so awesome and worthy to be worshiped, at all times.

This post shares some great links.

HOPE . . . even from prison:

Anybody can be happy when things are going great, but being truly joyful in the midst of tough times will keep everybody scratching their heads with wonder.

The Bible tells us in Philippians to “Rejoice in the Lord at all times, and again I say, rejoice!” (and He wrote that from prison!)

  • “Dare to Rejoice . . . in Philippians!” Bible Study Click here < < <
The theme is “Rejoice in the Lord at all times, and again I say rejoice!” Philippians 4:4.

  • HOPE . . . even during hard times on the mission field:

The world is watching us. How we handle challenging situations will often be the greatest mark of our Christian testimony. So much depends on our perspective. In our family, we’ve faced huge hardships on the mission field, financial needs way beyond our means (especially with all the orphan children), the passing away of fellow missionaries, and life-threatening diseases like malaria. But through it all, God has allowed us to STAY in His peace and hope.

“His praise,” the Bible says, “shall continually be in my mouth!”

    HOPE . . . even during a house fire:

One time, back in 1991, our home and nearly 100% of our belongings were destroyed by a big house fire (which was accidentally caused by our 5-year-old son, who had been playing with a lighter). We were thankful for God’s protection over our family, and chose to gather with dear friends to worship and sing. We didn’t know how the story would turn out. We didn’t know if our insurance would cover anything. So do you know what we did? We figured that if the enemy (the devil) was trying to steal, kill, and destroy our family. In prayer, we wondered what the enemy would “least” want us to do . . . and we decided to go on a mission trip as fast as we could to where the harvest of souls was most ripe.

A pastor friend was about to lead a mission trip into the just-opened Soviet Union, and we made the decision to join that trip and to help. Even before we had permission to clean up the sooty mess . . . and even before we knew if our insurance would cover anything, we headed to St. Petersburg, Russia, and participating in serving at an amazing Gospel outreach. We helped distributed tens of thousands of Bibles, which had been previously confiscated by the Soviet government. The time was amazing. In a large stadium, as the Gospel message was presented to a people who had been prohibited from hearing it for many years, there was practically a stampede as people came forward in the altar calls. The spiritual hunger was incredible. The perspective gave us such a peace, knowing that God was in control, even concerning our home.

  • No matter what, we can choose to live in HOPE and JOY.

  • Even when you’re CONCERNED FOR YOUR CHILDREN’S FAITH — This is probably the hardest thing for moms. In this audio, Nancy Leigh DeMoss from Revive Our Hearts leads a panel how to pray and to stand in faith without fear (with a team of godly moms who all faced huge kid-challenges). Oh, so encouraging!!!
  • Even when your PRAYERS AREN’T ANSWERED — Just think about how discouraged Zachariah and Elizabeth must have felt. They had been faithful to God their entire lives, and faithfully praying for years, yet their dreams were now totally impossible. What do you do when what comes so normally for others, like having a baby or finding a spouse, won’t happen in your life without a divine miracle? This two-part series, The Divine Advent: by Beth Moore is SO encouraging. (This one is a little Christmas-oriented, but it’s applicable any time of the year.)
  • Even when a loved one is FACING A SEVERE ILLNESS . . . listen to the thoughts of my friend, Bo Stern, who’s husband is battling ALS.
  • Here’s a SWEET LOVE STORY about my sister-in-law who’s husband died on Christmas morning. Both of these women are so filled with God’s perspective and joy.
  • Even in the MIDST OF A STORM — If you feel like you’re about to go under, listen to my husband preaching about when Jesus said, “We’re going over to the other side!” (Jon actually preached this in the midst of one of our biggest challenges in 20 years of ministry.)
  • Even when you’re DISCOURAGED — You can learn 5 Exit Strategies from the Ditch of Discouragement . . . (again, from my dear friend, Bo). These are SO good!

Daring Daughters, let’s remember that heaven is our home, not this world. Let’s keep God’s eternal perspective and remember to pray for God’s kingdom to COME in our lives here on earth. When the enemy comes in, let’s not just roll over and despair. Instead, let’s walk in faith and hope and joy!

Be encouraged, and no matter what, remember to “stay” in that place of God’s peace, hope, grace . . . and JOY!

    Blessings to you!

    How I Use a Bible-Reading Chart (audio)

Using a 1-year Bible Reading Chart doesn’t have to be legalistic. Just like stepping on a scale (or trying on your jeans) helps to “check-up” on your weight, using a Bible chart helps to hold yourself accountable to what you know God wants you to do. Let’s start afresh today. Just print out this chart and keep it with your Bible. Keep your heart focused on God by reading and obeying His Word!

Blessed are the Single Hearted (Part 1)

    amy carmichael

“Blessed are the single-hearted, for they shall enjoy much peace.”

“If you refuse to be hurried and pressed, if you stay your soul on God, nothing can keep you from that clearness of spirit which is life and peace.”

“In that stillness you will know what His will is.”

    — Amy Carmichael, Missionary to India (1867-1951)

    Wow. “Blessed are the single-hearted…”

    Isn’t that a beautiful focus?

Oh, I want to be “single-hearted” for the Lord, with my entire soul (my mind, my will, and my emotions) staying steadfastly on God, and not going off on some “crazy-wild-goose-chase” of distraction from God’s peace and God’s best.

    Seeking God, more than anything

I want to STAY single-hearted in that place of stillness with Him, where my spirit is clear and uncluttered, so I can know His perfect will . . . and I can know Him.

I want to live and “stay” in that place of total peace with God.

What is really the #1 most important focus of my heart?

More than anything, I want to know God.

    –Not just know “about” God.
–Not just know “how” to have an impressive devotional life.
–Not just know “how” to live as a godly or visionary woman.
–Not just know “how” to make a difference “for Him” in this world.

More than anything, I want to know God, personally and intimately.

Being single-hearted means caring more about my relationship “with God”
than anything I might do “for God.”

–More than my relationship with my husband.
–More than that priority time with my kids.
–More than my special girl-time with my dearest friends.
–More than special family-time with our extended relations.
–Even more than I care about doing stuff for His kingdom.
–Even more than seeking His direction, or His provision, or His grace.
–And even more than seeking His help to finish my “to-do” list.

I want to care about my relationship with Him more than anything.

    Oh, may I be single-hearted.

Too Busy? Get Re-Charged, by Getting in God’s Word!

Feel like life is spinning so fast that you don’t have time for reading the Bible? I understand about being busy . . .

In the middle of our business is when we need the Word the most it seems. It is our source of balance, a checking station for our priorities, if you will.

We have to be careful that in the middle of doing good things we are not deceived by the enemy “keeping us away” from the Word and the Life that it brings us.

Honestly for me, it’s like I can become so busy that I’m coasting on fumes rather than a full tank. And that always results in me doing everything in my own strength.

Of course after a day of me running on fumes, it’s like I’m draining my battery with no back up charger. I’m good for a few days . . . then I’m almost completely dead. That is why I love the Word, even in small segments. The Word plugs me in — into The source and into His resources! When I leave, I’m totally 100% rebooted!

Here is a link to a good article about some quick ways to get the Word in front of you daily…fun ideas. I find them helpful for me.

    Busy-Busy vs. Abiding

Are you trapped in a cycle of just being “BUSY-BUSY”?
By ABIDING in Christ, God can set you free . . . into His fruitfulness.

5 Steps to Breaking Free from BUSYNESS

    A. Abide in Christ

ABIDE in Christ, all throughout the day, especially through being in God’s Word.

    B. Brain-dump

Get a BINDER and use it for BRAIN-dumping. Keep track of your BIBLE reading. Dump out your to-do’s and your dreams . . . and surrender everything to the Lord, spirit, soul, body. Get your BODY moving and keep your BRAIN at peace..

    C. Clear the clutter

Emotionally, get rid of the clutter in your life. Clear out extra junk, such as fear, worry, concerns, and emotional baggage. Cast your cares on the Lord. Light a CANDLE and remind yourself to live in God’s peace and to be a light for Jesus in the world.

    D. Dare to Die

The Bible tells us that we are to be “crucified with Christ.” Jesus paid for it all on the Cross of Calvary and He is calling us to pick up our cross and to follow Him. We are to surrender everything to Him — all of our dreams and desires. Live a radical surrendered life.

    E. Enjoy every moment.

Let’s enjoy life, right now. The Bible tells us to delight ourselves in the Lord. Enjoy God’s presence.

God’s Name is “I AM that I AM.” He is the EVER-present One. He is EVERLASTING and ETERNAL. He is with us. We should be full of LIFE and JOY. Enjoy the beauty of His world. Consider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. Enjoy the stars and the sun. Enjoy your friends. Enjoy your relationships, with God and with others.

Worship the Lord . . . and enjoy all that He has for your life, right now.

Don’t just live with a BUSY-BUSY mentality. Instead, ABIDE with God.

Did I always want to be a missionary?

danette-2It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 15 years! I’ve been a missionary in the West African country of Niger since since July, 1998. There are two questions I am often asked: Did I always know I wanted to be a missionary? Did I always know God wanted me to be a missionary?

No, and no. But God knew. Here’s my story.

    The Seed is in You

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
    Jeremiah 1:5

The seed was in me – as a 7 year old.

I was saved at the age of seven and was raised in a Christian home by wonderful Christian parents. I’ve walked closely with the Lord ever since, but it wasn’t until adulthood that I became acutely aware of God’s grace.

I used to think that I didn’t really have a ‘story’. But a revelation while singing ‘Amazing Grace’ changed my mind. I did have an amazing story. It was the grace of God that saved me. He not only saved me from my sins, but He saved me from the powers of darkness of this world and kept me walking in His light all these years. It wasn’t my personality or my own determination or discipline that spared me from all the world had to ‘offer.’ Simply put, it was God’s amazing grace. Now, the older I get, the more I see… and the more I see, the more thankful I am for that grace that saved me.

But I wasn’t just saved to be saved, I was called. So are you. My calling was to be a missionary, reaching the unreached. But fulfillment of that calling wasn’t going to just drop in my lap. I had some responsibility.

The Bible is full of instruction for our lives. There are a multitude of passages that talk about the blessings that follow us and our children when we walk in the way of the Lord.
We see in 1 Kings 2 where King David is at the end of his life and is giving instructions to his son Solomon. Solomon was called to succeed David on the throne.

“Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: 2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; 4 that the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me…”

    Solomon’s calling came with requirements:

Keep the charge of the Lord, walk in His ways, keep his commandments… Then you will prosper and the Lord will fulfill His word concerning you. For God’s will and plan to be fulfilled in our lives, we must walk in His ways.

After high school, I attended ORU, a Christian university in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My sophomore year I met Neal. I was a chaplain and he was a freshman on my brother wing. He came straight from Nigeria, where he was raised as a missionary kid. He intrigued me. He was, as I like to describe him, ‘bush’. He spoke with a Nigerian accent and he thought downtown Tulsa was a huge metropolis. As the girls’ chaplain I had the responsibility of pairing the brother and sister wings with prayer partners. I did this by drawing names from a hat, but not before first pairing myself with Neal. Sneaky, I know.

A friendship began to develop into something more and on our second official date Neal informed me that he was going to be a missionary. My thought? “Whatever. He’s a business major. Once he gets going in his field, he’ll get over the missions thing.” It’s not that I was opposed to full-time missions, I just wasn’t awakened yet to my calling. I had a natural trust in God and a desire to do exactly what He had planned for me.

The seed was there, but it remained dormant.

Our relationship progressed as did Neal’s intensity for missions. I continued to trust God and prayed that if this was the man for me, that an actual desire to do missions would surface. As an upperclassman I would get frustrated when I would hear my friends talking specifically about their careers, how many children they would have, the type of home they would live in – all the way down to paint color! I didn’t have specifics on any of those things – and I didn’t really care about a white picket fence. All I knew for sure was that I wanted to do what God wanted me to do.

I later realized that if I had predetermined my exact job and house color, it would not have lined up with Neal, and I may have assumed he wasn’t the one.

Here we are at ORU, the seed in both of us.
Any guesses to the year? (Hint: Big hair.)

Our love grew and in 1989 we married. I graduated with a degree in Social Work and Neal in Management Information Systems. We both got jobs in our fields, while still pursuing ministry. We found a church home and were asked to be youth pastors. It wasn’t missions, but it was something that our hands found to do and we were determined to do it with all our might. It was preparation time. During our 5 years as youth leaders we sent kids on more than 30 summer mission trips, while patiently (sometimes) waiting our turn.

Our family in 1998, just before moving to the 10/40 nation of Niger, Africa

    Trae, Danette, Tanika, Neal

God continued to lead us and 8 years of marriage and 2 great kids later, the Lord directed us to attend Bible School to officially prepare for the field. During Bible School we received confirmation that the country of Niger would be our field. We spent 10 months raising our support and during that time an amazing thing happened. I was sharing in my mom and dad’s church about how I had recently come across some of my elementary school papers and discovered that I had written a report on the country of Nigeria the same year Neal moved there. Coincidence? I think not. It was a germinating seed.

I was told also of a report I had written in junior high titled ‘Understanding Africa’ where I wrote that I wanted to be a missionary in Africa. I don’t even remember writing it, but my name was on it. The seed was there. Later that evening my mom questioned me, “Don’t you remember the prophecy spoken to you when you were 12? That you would be a rose, blooming in the desert?” It wasn’t until she said that that the memory came back. Mom continued, “What about the time I found you crying because you couldn’t understand why everyone couldn’t know Jesus?” I was 7. The seed.

Our family in 2001 with Tobi, our new addition.

The amazing thing about a spiritual seed is that it won’t die. It’s in you. Even if you haven’t been pursuing God as you should or are new in your walk with Him, it’s not too late! God’s seed, His plan for you – it’s in you. Even if it’s dormant. Wake it up! Begin germinating it by pursuing hard after Jesus and by walking in His ways.

In Jeremiah 2:21 God said to the Israelite’s, “Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality.”

You are full of high quality seed!

It was my privilege to be a part of discipling these Gourmantche ladies.

One of our greatest joys (and responsibilities) are the children
